While the Top 200 gives a solid overview of UK-wide trends, it doesn’t capture the regional differences that make local events unique. Northern Irish crowds have their own distinct taste. Here, Irish and Scottish artists play a much bigger role, and some local favourites are massive compared to their popularity elsewhere in the UK.
Rather than compiling my own Top 200 list and prioritising local favourites over global chart-toppers like "Mr. Brightside" and "Dancing Queen," I instead recommend starting with the official DJ Event Planner list. You can then use local knowledge and your own judgment to perfectly fine-tune your final playlist.
In my 15+ years DJing in Northern Ireland, two tracks stand out above all others - by a long-shot...
Artemesia – “Bits and Pieces”
"Bits and Pieces" carries popularity from Scotland and has become an unofficial anthem here too. I don't like playing the same song twice, but I'll make an exception for this one! It's the most common song that I get asked to play, and the most requested "last song" of the night.
Mark McCabe – “Maniac 2000”
“Maniac 2000,” from Irish DJ Mark McCabe, has a similar place in our hearts. The 25th anniversary edition sounds a bit more polished than the original live recording.
There are plenty of other songs that consistently do well here, but aren't as massive elsewhere:
Westlife - Irish icons whose hits remain beloved across generations.
Whigfield - "Saturday Night" - Why is this not on the Top 200? Whigfield has always been on my must-play list, long before it was in Derry Girls!
Love Inc. - "Superstar"- Cemented by its unbeatably positive message and championed relentlessly by local DJs, this track is a definitive Northern Irish party classic.
The Cranberries - Irish legends that always get requested.
The Pogues - Legendary band who fused the energy of punk rock with traditional Irish folk music.
Steve Earle - “Galway Girl” – another sing-along favourite that always gets people smiling.
Nathan Carter - a well-known British-born Irish country music singer based in the UK and Ireland.
Gerry Cinnamon - The Scottish singer-songwriter whose anthems like “Belter” “Canter” and "Discoland" have huge followings here.
Undertones - "Teenage Kicks" - The Derry band's debut single became an anthem during The Troubles.
U2 - Contrasting the rest of this list, U2 is arguably the only band here more popular abroad than at home. But they're a massive part of our national story, so they absolutely belong.
Sham Rock - “Tell Me Ma” – a guaranteed crowd-pleaser rooted in Irish tradition.
DJ Sammy - He may hail from Spain, but for an entire generation of Northern Irish clubbers, DJ Sammy defines their youth.
Alice DJ - "Better Off Alone" - A throwback staple and guaranteed floor-filler.
Micky Modelle is a Belfast-born DJ and producer.
Sunset Bros X Mark McCabe - "I'm Feeling It (In The Air)" - He's not just a 1-hit wonder.
While these artists and tracks may not dominate the charts across Britain, here in Northern Ireland, they are absolutely essential to our culture. A special shout-out goes to Bicep, Billy Gillies, Jazzy, and the many other incredible DJs putting us on the map. I would also like to acknowledge breakthrough Irish bands, Picture This and Amble - requested a lot in recent years.
While I champion our local music scene, I wouldn't stretch to include local songs simply for the sake of it. The main objective is to keep everyone engaged with their favourite songs.
The UK Official Charts / Top 40 and Shazam chart are useful resources for discovering the most recent hits, however I rarely introduce the newest entries into a set. Most people haven't heard brand new songs, and even heavy radio rotation doesn't prevent a new song from emptying the dance floor. It's better to guarantee high energy by utilising familiar, established hits that keep everyone on their feet.
Every year sees a few new songs totally crush everything else though - they can become ubiquitous in no time. Always factor in last year's major breakthrough hits. Since the DJEP Top 200 is a year behind, it doesn't register these blow-up songs until the following year, so the current list can feel incomplete. Case in point: Chappell Roan's "Pink Pony Club" is absent from the 2024 list, but is probably the biggest contender for the 2025 list!
Amy Macdonald is a Scottish singer-songwriter loved in Ireland for her folk-rock sound.
While the DJ Event Planner Top 200 is a fantastic starting point, it’s just as important to include personal preferences when planning a playlist. Adding songs that mean something to you, your friends, or your community helps make the night feel more personal. Mixing popular, crowd-pleasing tracks with a few local favourites or personal choices gives your playlist character and ensures everyone hears something that feels special, not just predictable...
Mumford & Sons is an English folk-rock band famous for their banjo-driven sound.
